Trick or treat, Jakarta-style

A busy day in Jakarta (where the official language is Bahasa….not Indonesian, and I had doofily assumed)…a busy day that began with sun!! We love the sun…until we step outside and realize we’re only about 6 degrees below the equator as the instant-on sweat bath commences. Man, I mean, like, POW—a million tiny faucets turn on all at once. Thank goodness the A/C in Pak Dikdik’s minivan blows ice cubes. Got to the Motorola office in good time and got some interviews in, then we zipped across town to the Indosat building (the customer we’re here to interview) for some b-roll shots. Cool place sort of near the US Embassy, and within sight of the largest mosque in all of Indonesia (I think that’s what our local motohost Feri told us…it’s the place with the big Eternal Flame-type monument). From there it was off to the actual location for the interview we were there to shoot….at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Jakarta. Does that sound familiar to you? It did to me….and you can see why from the picture in Aug. 2003. It was bombed, badly, by the same idiot extremists who did the Bali bombing. Most of the lobby and a lot of a restaurant we’re blasted away (along with a lot of people). I read they found the suicide bomber's head on the 5th floor. Anyway---that’s where we spent our afternoon. Lobby looks better now, eh? Feri said we’d be ok---the interview was scheduled to happen on like the 30th floor, high above where any bomb could have an effect. That made us feel safe! Wrapped up our interviews as a big gray thunderhead came across the sky---lightning, but no rain. Then it was off into the evening traffic jam as we rolled out to the airport for the JAL red-eye to Tokyo.
